During the first half of 2008 I went to the Amalfi Coast several times, drawing and painting from life, taking photographs and writing about the places I've enjoyed visiting.   I stayed as usual in the Continental Hotel in Praiano and for the first time made a series of studies of the nearby Praiano Beach and La Torre del Mare, where Paolo Sandulli, the brilliant ceramic sculptor, creates his work.

In May 2008 I began making ink drawings, some tinted with watercolour, on Amalfi paper, the beautiful soft paper that is made in that area. My preferred subjects were the coastline with its towers, rocks, picturesque towns and bathing places, and the cafes of Positano, Sorrento and Praiano.  In April and May this year I also visited Florence, Assisi, Arezzo and Spoleto, in Tuscany and Umbria, and made drawings from the buildings there. The beautiful architcture of Florence and the hill towns of Umbria filled my sketchbooks.

The recent gouache paintings are often crammed with characters, some from my photographs, others from my memory of the busy scene last summer. In oils, I began to paint impasto pictures using a palette knife, which unfortunately don't reproduce well on a screen, but I have included one or two on this site.

I've spent this summer at home and have begun two new projects: a series of gouache paintings of English scenes based on my home town, Guildford in Surrey, and a series of life studies and male nudes in oils and graphic media. My inspiration for both has, as usual, been highly personal and, in the case of the figure paintings, accompanied by writings in poetry and prose. I hope you will enjoy browsing through my work and reading my blogs, which include some of the many photographs I have taken this year in beautiful Italy.
