Janice Windle - Biography ![]() Born in England in 1945, I trained as a fine artist (1966-9) at the Central School of Art and Design, London WC1 (now merged with St. Martin’s School of Art and part of the London University of the Arts) specialising in painting and sculpture, with etching and enamelling as subsidiary subjects. I then went on to teach Art and Art History at secondary school and A level after completing an Art Teacher’s Certificate at the London University Institute of Education (1970-1).
My love of colour and forms in nature and the man-made environment has inspired me to draw always from observation as a starting point for my paintings, using photography to provide additional references.
Since first visiting the Sorrentine Peninsula in 2004, I have been visiting the Amalfi Coast and the Penisola Sorrentina at least four times a year, sketching and painting en plein air and developing larger compositions in my studio. I have come to know and love the coastal towns of Sorrento, Amalfi, Positano and Praiano as the principal subjects of my art. I have also been inspired by a visit to Barcelona and the work of Antonin Gaudi.
In my work in Italy, I seek to express my love of the brilliant light and the forms and textures of the area’s unique rock formations, dramatic sea coast and varied, beautiful architecture.
I use oil, acrylic, gouache, watercolour and ink to produce my images, on paper and on canvas. Recently I have been developing large collages using my photographs. These both stand alone as artworks in themselves and provide the starting points for drawings and paintings in oils. I have also permitted inkjet prints of my paintings which are signed and numbered. These are made to order in short limited editions and are available on paper or canvas.
When not painting subjects from my visits to Italy, I draw and paint from the human figure and create compositions based on British landscape and interiors. I also write poems and illustrate them. The texts of the poems can be found at http://PoemHunter.com.
